Finding literature

How to search and review literature for dissertations and projects? Where to start? – Choose professional library resources

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR LITERATURE ON A PARTICULAR SUBJECT, CHOOSE...

  • Muiltisearch engine from the ML webpage
All WUT resources are searchable by a multisearch engine. There are 4 bookmarks available on ML webpage:
    • All resources: searching across the library resources, including the library catalogue, most library databases, and WUT Digital Library Library
    • Catalogue: integrates resources of the Main Library, its branches and majority of faculty and institute libraries
    • E-resources: includes on-line full-text journals and books, subscribed databases and selected Open Access resources
    • Digital Library: selection of digitized materials from the WUT Main Library, textbooks and learning materials and WUT research output, as well as materials of historical and cultural significance
  • E-resources – list of e-databases
In the bookmark E-resources you will find two options - E-resources title list and List of e-databases. List of e-databases is covers all kinds of databases available mostly online, including bibliographic, abstract and full text databases, catalogues, scientific search engines and so on. How to use it? – Just look on the descriptions and symbols placed after the database name
  • Abstract databases
Abstract databases will direct you to the proper full text resources. Here you can do more complex search, specific to one or several disciplines. Abstract databases cover summaries of various types of documents, i.e. journals articles, conference papers, technical reports, patents and sometimes standards and also selected books. When searching through abstract databases you can simultaneously see papers form various publishes, in various languages (not only in English). You can use advanced searching tools (subject dictionaries, classification tools, thesaurus). They are often tailored to the needs of a specific field. When choosing a specific database focus on information posted in the column “Subject” and description available below the database name.As the name abstract database suggests, it includes only summaries. To move from abstract to full text use, 360 Link (or Fulltext link In WoS and SciFinder databases). If the title is available in WUT, you will be directed to thevpublisher’s platform to get the full text. You can save it, read it online or print. If the full text is not available online, you need to check in the catalogue whether it is available in print. If not ask for it through Interlibrary Loans at Main Library.
  • Full text databases
Database list covers also full text databases. These are databases of specific publishers. As far as journals are concerned, their content is registered in abstract databases. Full text databases are particularly important when a user wants to get information from books, since there is very little information about book content in abstract databases. It is then advisable to search for books separately in full text databases. Unlike library catalogue entries, bibliographic records have very rich subject descriptions in the form of keywords, subject classification terms or abstracts. It is also possible to search directly in the documents full text.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SPECIFIC JOURNAL OR BOOK TITLE, CHOOSE...

  • Catalogue bookmark
You can check whether the title is available in the library, whether it is possible to borrow the book and for how long. The Catalogue is mainly used to locate printed resources.

You can also stay in the default search window and enter part of a title and change Field to search on Title, when you know only some title words. In the results set there will be information about the journals location and available years. It is not possible to search for article titles in the library catalogue. When looking for titles of books, use Title or Author index to browse or tile words In Search option.
